Erectile dysfunction, or ED, is the inability to get or maintain an erection firm enough for satisfactory sexual activity. It is far more common than most men realize. Studies suggest that by the age of 40, around 40% of men have experienced it to some degree, and the number rises with age.

Despite how common it is, many men feel embarrassed to talk about it. This is unfortunate because ED is very treatable, and in some cases it can be an early warning sign of a more serious underlying condition.

ED can have physical or psychological causes, and often both. Physical causes include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, hormonal imbalances, and cardiovascular disease. In fact, ED is now recognized as an early marker of heart disease in some men. Psychological causes include stress, anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties.

The first step is an honest conversation with a doctor. A simple blood test can check testosterone levels, blood sugar, cholesterol, and other relevant markers. A physical examination and a review of your medications — some of which can cause ED — is also important.

Treatment options range from lifestyle changes and oral medications to penile injections, vacuum devices, and for men who do not respond to other treatments, surgical options. The right treatment depends on the cause and your individual circumstances.

Do not wait years before seeking help. ED is not something you have to live with, and it is not a reflection of your masculinity. It is a medical condition, and it deserves proper medical attention.
